More about Ray Green

I have always been drawn to the wild places. There is an energy and wild beauty that inspires me.

I developed my wild places skills – navigation, canoeing, rock climbing and camping – at University and on various courses in my twenties. When I qualified as an Architect I moved to the Lakes to be near fantastic rock climbing. I was asked to take Venture Scouts climbing, and then I qualified as a summer and winter mountain leader, with involvement in Scout Mountaineering.

Later I retrained as a counsellor, psychotherapist and ultimately as a supervisor of counsellors.
This work also felt like journeying into wild places, walking people’s narrow edges with them.

I have now retired as a counsellor, and dedicate my time to travelling, painting and writing.

Wild places call me, inspire me and make me curious. In silence and solitude, I explore them, sketching and writing. I love wild mountains, fast flowing becks and surging storm tides, roaring waterfalls, sketching lochs and lakes while wild camping on their shores. Old buildings in wild landscapes, hinting their story-history. Exotic foreign landscapes, and local folk from other cultures going about their lives.

As a mountaineer and wilderness canoeist these adventure journeys create experiences and meetings, portals into the wild and savage heart of the wilderness, and myself. This is what I paint, and write about in my stories – their beauty, fun, risk, wild energy and meanings. I like to share my paintings and stories in the hope that boundaries dissolve, and bridges build between painter/story teller and you, the listener.
